Built by a quilter, for quilters who demand precision
Sage & Thread began the way most EPP studios do — with a quilter who couldn't find the tools she needed, so she made them herself. What started as a personal solution became a small, considered shop for the EPP community.
From a single hexagon to a full studio
English Paper Piecing is one of the oldest quilting techniques — and one of the most demanding. Every piece depends on the accuracy of the paper template beneath it. For years, the options were limited: pre-cut papers of inconsistent quality, or cutting your own. Neither was good enough.
The first Sage & Thread templates were 3D-printed on a desktop printer in a spare room. The tolerances were better than anything available. Friends asked for sets. Then their friends did. The shop grew from there — slowly, deliberately, without compromising on what made the original pieces worth having.
Today we make precision laser-cut paper pieces, 3D-printed templates from engineering-grade materials, original patterns we write and test ourselves, and the patent-pending Alignment & Pressing System — a tool that didn't exist until we built it. Everything ships from our studio. Nothing is outsourced.
In-house, by design
Every 3D-printed template is designed in our studio and printed on our own machines. We use engineering-grade materials — not the consumer-grade filament that warps under an iron or degrades after a season of use. Dimensional accuracy is held to within 0.1mm. In EPP, that fraction is the difference between a rosette that lies flat and one that doesn't.
The patent-pending Alignment & Pressing System came from a specific frustration: no existing tool handled both the registration and the pressing step in a single workflow. We spent six months prototyping before we were satisfied. The result is a system that EPP quilters at every level reach for on every project.

- Made in-house
- Every paper piece, 3D-printed template, and pattern is designed and produced by us — not sourced, not resold. If we wouldn't use it ourselves, it doesn't leave the studio.
- Precision
- EPP is an exacting craft. A template that's off by half a millimetre compounds across a hundred pieces. We hold tolerances that the craft demands — and we test everything before it ships.
- Craft first
- We're EPP quilters before we're a shop. Every product decision starts with a needle in hand. The tools we make are the tools we reach for in our own EPP practice.
- Innovation
- Traditional craft deserves modern tools. Our patent-pending Alignment & Pressing System is the result of years of frustration with what didn't exist — so we built it.
- Longevity
- Paper pieces are consumable; templates should last a lifetime. We use engineering-grade materials for our 3D-printed tools because we want you to still be using them in twenty years.
